Tchaikovsky’s symphonies aren’t just about the melodies: they’re no-holds-barred emotional autobiographies, bursting at the seams with all the composer’s hopes, fears and desperate passions. And the Pathétique (which means ‘full of feeling’) is the most overwhelming of them, his heart-breaking final symphony.
In the first half of tonight’s programme, music by two of Hungary’s most famous sons – including Kodaly’s famous Dances and a Hungarian violin concerto performed by the Orchestra’s Hungarian Leader, Tamás Kocsis.
