Hough plays Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto

Shostakovich Festive Overture
Beethoven Piano Concerto No.5 Emperor
Prokofiev Symphony No.5

Rafael Payare Conductor
Stephen Hough Piano

A momentous season comes to its triumphant conclusion in a blaze of fanfare and Prokofiev’s heroic and joyful Fifth Symphony, a work so popular that it (remarkably) put its Russian composer on the front cover of Time magazine in 1945. And, at the centrepiece of this heroic programme, Beethoven lays all his cards on the table with the grandest, most stirring piano concerto he ever wrote – and in fact the Emperor was his last, and possibly greatest achievement in concerto writing. At the hands of the great British pianist Stephen Hough (‘the virtuoso who begins where others leave off’), this promises to be a performance to remember and a spectacular conclusion to a truly memorable Season 2016/17.
