Premiering The Class(ic) Symphony

Our LCE team worked on a fantastic project with pupils at St Moninna’s Primary School and their teacher, creating a symphony written by the pupils themselves!

During lockdown last year, a group of P5 pupils at St. Moninnaโ€™s Primary School in Cloughoge had a student teacher from St. Maryโ€™s University College work with their class. On โ€˜Music Mondays,โ€™ each participating pupil worked online to create a miniature composition and their student teacher (and past St. Moninnaโ€™s pupil!), Aidan McKeown, then put them together to form what they called โ€˜The P5 Symphonyโ€™. Word reached the Learning and Community Engagement Team here at the UO and together, we worked to shape the symphony and prepare it for recording.

This beautiful piece, now with the official title โ€˜The Class(ic) Symphonyโ€™, was recorded in the Spires Centre by the Ulster Orchestra and the now-P6 pupils were there to watch as our very special guests. We also had John Toal as a special guest and you can listen to his chat with the teachers and pupils from St Moninnaโ€™s, as well as our own Jonathan Simmance and Colin Stark. Weโ€™re looking forward to sharing the recording in due course too.

Well done everyone!
