Beethoven - Overture: Coriolan
Reicha - Piano Concerto
Beethoven - Symphony No.5

Beethoven’s Overture to Coriolan and his Fifth Symphony are perfectly paired; both themed around grappling with Fate. In the play that inspired the overture, Coriolanus’s grapple with Fate didn’t end well, but Beethoven’s tussle in the Fifth Symphony results in one of classical music’s most glorious moments of victory, conveyed in the brilliant sunshine of the Symphony’s finale. It’s exciting, exhilarating and utterly triumphant.
For this concert, Beethoven is paired with a piano concerto by his friend and contemporary, Antoine Reicha. Our soloist, Ivan Ilić, is a champion of Reicha’s music who values the composer’s spontaneity and inventiveness and says:

“This is somebody who was a long-time friend of Beethoven, a student of Haydn, the counterpoint teacher of Berlioz, Franck, and Liszt… He’s like a historical nexus. To hear his music is an opportunity to indulge one’s curiosity.”

Your curiosity will be rewarded with one of classical music’s hidden gems.
