Anna Clyne This Midnight Hour
Symphony No. 7
Not one, but two absolute blockbusters form the core of this concert! Fenella Humphreys features as soloist in Sibelius’s heart-breakingly beautiful Violin Concerto, which glitters with the snow of a Finnish landscape.
For all the powerhouse virtuosity of its solo part, Sibelius's Violin Concerto also has a brooding streak that isn’t at all typical of the genre, and it takes an unusually fine artist to be able to bridge the two extremes. Fenella Humphreys’s playing is a genuine revelation in the way it brings out the music’s dark and introspective qualities, with no shortage of technical panache…” BBC Music Magazine
Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony is a euphoric work, full of power and drama. The gravitas in the symphony’s second movement was perfect for the soundtrack of the 2010 film The King’s Speech
and the finale was apparently summed up by Tchaikovsky as “A whole series of images, full of unrestrained joy, full of bliss and pleasure of life”.
US based composer Anna Clyne's richly imaginative This Midnight Hour
starts the musical journey.
