Effervescent Irish soprano Ailish Tynan joins Jac van Steen for a programme of music inspired by love..
Debussy composed Printemps during a residency after winning the Prix de Rome, stating "I should like to express the slow and laboured birth of beings and things in nature, their gradual blossoming, and finally the joy of being born into some new life.” The piece’s first movement reflects the gradual blossoming, while the dance-like second movement brings the joy of new life.
David Matthews is the leading English composer working today, and his beautiful setting of Lamartine's Le Lac muses on the poet's lost love and the memory of their first meeting. Our thanks to the Ralph Vaughan Williams Trust for supporting the performance of this work.
Richard Strauss’s Four Orchestral Songs were a wedding gift for his wife, soprano Pauline de Ahna, and they capture the happiness and elation of love. However, the same is not quite so true of his opera Intermezzo, from which we get the The Four Symphonic Interludes – Intermezzo is semi-autobiographical and based on some of the more tempestuous parts of the Strauss marriage!
