KEREM HASAN    CONDUCTOR

Join BBC Radio 3 for a FREE invitation concert as it celebrates the talents of 2 composers who embraced the symphonic form with freshness and confidence.

Mozart wrote almost a third of his symphonic output between 1772 and 1774, and his Symphony No. 29 helps rounds off that fertile period. Written when he was just 18, we find a hugely experienced composer, writing expressive and highly adventurous material. That sense of confidence particularly radiates in the slow movement of this work – a symphony celebrated for its grace, elegance and charm, where Mozart’s symphonic voice rings clear.

Nielsen’s Second Symphony came in 1901, taking the composer to new artistic heights. It’s inspired by a brightly-coloured picture, which he saw hanging in a village pub, reflecting the ‘Four Temperaments’ or ‘Four Colours’ of human character, noted in Greco-Roman medicine: Choleric, Phlegmatic, Melancholic and Sanguine. The result is music that’s full of contrasting moods and textures: the perfect soundscape for a May afternoon.

Kerem Hasan, regarded as one of Britain’s most exciting young conductors, makes his debut with the Ulster Orchestra.
