The Ulster Orchestra, along with their partners Colin Neighbourhood Partnership, Shankill Children’s Zone and Queen's University Innovation Zones, are seeking experienced and qualified music tutors to be part of our flagship Crescendo Project. The partners’ vision is to improve outcomes for children through music.
The project aims to increase the resilience, aspirations and emotional development of children from areas of social and economic disadvantage through a programme of music skills development, to increase participants’ musical skills while contributing to their improved wellbeing and self-worth.
Situated in four schools in north and west Belfast, the project aims to deliver weekly workshops with P1-P3 classes to develop fundamental music skills and progress to learning orchestral instruments from P4-P7.
We are currently recruiting tutors in the following instruments:
There will be a range of hours available to suit the needs of the project, from approximately 3 hours to 10 hours a week.

Job Title: Peripatetic Tutors (range of instruments & hours available)
Reporting To: Head of Community Engagement and Grants, Deputy Production Manager, UO Animateur (as relevant)
Type of Post: Worker Status
Payment: £37.08 per hour
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential Criteria:
- A degree or equivalent qualification in music, music performance and/ or music teaching or equivalent work experience in individual or group tutoring
- Demonstrable flexibility of approach to learning, and an ability to motivate learners of varying abilities
- Flexibility in terms of working hours
- Demonstrable passion for teaching music and ability to adapt to each pupil’s needs
- Ability and experience of working with individual and/or small groups of children across senior Key Stage One and Key Stage Two (7-11 years)
Desirable Criteria:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work as part of a wider team
- Experience of leading or co-leading workshops or lessons in a group music tuition context
- Awareness of the primary school curriculum in Northern Ireland including social and emotional learning
Personal Style and Behaviour:
- A good team player who is flexible and adaptable
- A positive communication style that engenders confidence in others
- A motivated and enthusiastic individual
- A sense of high standards and efficiency
General:
- You must be available to deliver workshops on a weekly basis within the school term from October 2025 to early June 2026.
- You will be subject to the relevant Access NI police check procedures and must adhere to the Orchestra’s Safeguarding, Health and Safety and other relevant policies in all aspects of your work.
