Inspiration Workshops for Schools

Performances by small ensembles of Ulster Orchestra musicians delivered directly in schools

Inspiration workshops are outreach performances by small ensembles of Ulster Orchestra musicians which are delivered in schools – particularly those schools where there is limited music provision or take-up in Music at GCSE level. Performances are designed to engage pupils at Key Stages 2, 3 and 4 and to make you think again about what classical music is!

This year, our musicians visited 930 post-primary students from seven different schools across Northern Ireland to deliver a one-hour interactive show, ‘Inside the Music’. Journeying through the physics of sound, the mechanics of orchestral instruments and the relationship and unconscious impact of orchestral music on young minds today, the show explored the power and influence music has on our emotional responses and imagination, culminating in a student led improvisation of a movie soundscape.

The pupils enjoyed seeing and hearing the instruments played live and they enjoyed the filming and gaming musical content. The pupils really enjoyed getting involved or seeing their friends getting involved in the music making in the soundscape finale

An enjoyable and informative workshop for Key stages 3-5.

We shared with another school which enabled more pupils to avail of the fantastic opportunity. Being a rural school in the heart of a traditional music setting it is invaluable to have access to classical music, musicians and instruments to broaden the students education. Thank you so much for coming to Dungiven, we really appreciated it.

Many teenagers rarely experience orchestral music being performed live. This workshop gave our pupils an insight into orchestral instruments and motivated and inspired many to appreciate and learn more in the classroom

It was great for them to see a range of instruments being performed live and had links to the Film music aspect of the GCSE Music syllabus

Our year 8s are currently studying instruments of the orchestra and year 9s are studying soundtracks so it linked up well with our current schemes of work
