Overview

Memory Box Project
with the Spectrum Centre Women’s Group and Book Club, west Belfast

During December 2019 – January 2020, Ulster Orchestra musicians, staff, Music Animateur Jonathan Simmance and poet/facilitator Shelley Tracy worked alongside Spectrum Women’s Group and Book Club participants to create stories and music around memories.

Some of the poems were set to music by the women and Jonathan, and covered topics as varied as childhood holidays and grandchildren.

The project was supported by the Tampon Tax fund administered through the Community Foundation Northern Ireland and concluded with a final performance by participating women alongside 24 Ulster Orchestra musicians in Malvern Primary School on 28 January 2019.

The facilitators did a great job in helping me understand composition – both musical and literary

I feel I have a greater understanding of what music conveys by way of emotion and picture painting

Very emotional experience for me on the whole. Brought lots of memories

Brought everyone closer and developed understanding of others in the group

Very emotional experience for me on the whole. Brought lots of memories
